Paver Base Calculator | Free Construction Calculators
Calculate the amount of base material needed for your paver project.
Base Depth Recommendations
- Walkways/Patios (Pedestrian): 4" compacted base
- Driveways (Light Vehicles): 6" compacted base
- Heavy Duty (Trucks/RVs): 8" compacted base
- Commercial Areas: 10-12" compacted base
Base Material Options
- Crushed Stone (3/4"): Most common, excellent drainage
- Crushed Gravel: Good stability, cost-effective
- Road Base: Contains fines, better compaction
- Class II Base: Mix of sizes, professional grade
Compaction Guidelines
- Install in layers: 2-3" lifts for proper compaction
- Compaction tool: Plate compactor (min 5,000 lbs force)
- Moisture content: Slightly damp for best compaction
- Compaction rate: Expect 20-30% reduction after compaction
Base Installation Steps
- Excavate to proper depth (base + sand + paver thickness)
- Install geotextile fabric to prevent base migration
- Spread base material in 2-3" layers
- Compact each layer thoroughly with plate compactor
- Check level and grade for proper drainage
- Add bedding sand layer (1") before paver installation
Important Notes
- Poor base = failed paver installation (most common mistake)
- Proper drainage is critical - slope away from structures
- Use edge restraints to prevent base and paver movement
- Consider soil conditions - clay may need extra base depth
