Paint Coverage Rates
Standard coverage per gallon (one coat on smooth surfaces):
- Flat/Matte: 350-400 sq ft per gallon
- Eggshell/Satin: 350-400 sq ft per gallon
- Semi-Gloss: 300-350 sq ft per gallon
- High-Gloss: 300-350 sq ft per gallon
- Exterior: 300-400 sq ft per gallon
- Ceiling: 350-400 sq ft per gallon
Coverage Can Vary Based On
- Surface Texture: Rough = less coverage, smooth = more coverage
- Porosity: Porous surfaces absorb more paint
- Color: Hiding dark colors reduces effective coverage
- Application: Brush uses less than roller, spray uses most
- Paint Quality: Higher quality often covers better
Surface Type Coverage
Smooth Surfaces (Better Coverage)
- Previously painted walls
- Smooth drywall
- Wood with primer
- Metal surfaces
Rough Surfaces (Less Coverage)
- Textured walls
- Stucco
- Brick/concrete block
- Unpainted wood
Paint Can Sizes
- Sample: 8 oz (covers ~25 sq ft)

Coverage Tips
- Always prime unpainted surfaces for better coverage
- Use paint with primer for better one-coat coverage
- Apply thin, even coats rather than thick coats
- Allow proper drying time between coats
- Buy extra for touch-ups and future repairs
When You'll Need More Paint
- Painting over dark colors with light colors
- First time painting new drywall
- Very porous or textured surfaces
- Using lower quality paint
- Spray application method
